This book describes methods for solving arithmetcal prob lems by quot;quick and easyquot; routes. These are not intended to replace te more systematic methods familiar to every one but to supplement them.
It is customary in books such as this to include many exercises to develop the reader's confidence and skill in handlng these easy but possibly new techniques. However, such exercises would clutter the book and reduce te room available for explaining the principles behind the metods;
and it is crucial, in my opinion, to exlain tese principles toroughly.
I think it is fair to assume that anyone interested enough in the subjet to read this book will have the wit and en egy to make exercises of his own. Better yet, I hope he will take the trouble to exercise the methods described in thiss book on all arithmetical problems that come his way in day-to-day le.
At first t may actually slow him. Through sheer lack of p practice these short cuts may take more tme than would the quot;tried-and-truequot; methods. Let him bear up, though .
With a little patience, he will fnd himself racing through to corect results in practcally no tme and with practcally no pain.
